The Legacy
About Us
Many years ago, at the age of about three, I was given a stern lecture by my mother, who somewhat harshly insisted that it was improper to annotate 16th century books with crayon. Thereafter her antiquarian books were kept locked away out of my purview.
Many years passed, where I continued an interest in books but more as an occasional collector than anything else. Then, coming up to retirement, my wife and myself decided that we would deal in antiques to supplement our pensions. Over a number of years we decided that my primary interest was in rare books and my wife's was in Georgian silver.
I now seek out exceptional books and my wife seeks exceptional silver.
The illustrated title opposite is from one of the very first books that I bought with the intention of reselling — a fabulous 1627 history of the Siege of Breda. I still have managed not to sell it.
What We Specialise In
We specialise in Travel, Scottish Books and the occasional Map. We don't hold large stocks and we do not operate out of a shop. We prefer to buy a few exceptional items rather than a large quantity of ordinary ones. Every book and piece of silver is researched, described honestly, and priced fairly.
How We Sell — Online and at Fairs
We do not have a shop you can visit, but we sell in two ways:
1. Online: Through this website and through our listings on AbeBooks. You can buy securely here with worldwide insured shipping. If you see something you like, you are always welcome to call or email for more photographs, a collation, or just to talk about the book. We are happy to reserve items.
2. At Book Fairs: We exhibit at a number of antiquarian book fairs around the UK — particularly in Scotland and the North of England. Our upcoming fairs are listed on our Fairs page. If you would like to see a book at a fair, let us know and we will bring it along.
If you have a book or collection you are thinking of selling that fits our interests, we are always pleased to hear from you.
